Research
Museum on Main welcomes anyone who would like to do research on local history, including buildings, pioneer families and events. Our collections consist of nearly nine thousand objects, including over 3,300 photographs and almost 2,500 other documents, that document and illustrate the people, events, and places of the Amador-Livemore Valley throughout its history. Noteworthy collections include clothing, accessories photographs and documents associated with Phoebe Apperson Hearst; documents, photographs, and other items related to the Valley's founding families (Kottinger, Bernal, Neal, et al.); photographs related to Pleasanton's history as a shooting location for the silent film industry between 1917 and 1927; copies of town council resolutions from 1912 to 1931; and the photo archive of the Tri-Valley Herald from the late 1980s into the early 21st century.
Staff and docent support for archival research is limited, so researchers are strongly encouraged to make appointments through our Curator: [email protected]. For researchers unable to consult the Museum's collections in person, research services are available as staff and docent time permits, at the rate of $30/hour plus reproduction and shipping costs for requested materials.
A list of books and other publications in the museum's library collection can be accessed here.
The Museum on Main's policy on permissions and fees for the use of materials in its collection appears here.
DISCLAIMER
Museum on Main does not provide appraisals, authentications, or “certification” services regarding the historic status of objects, buildings, or properties. In making its collections and other historical resources available to the public, Museum staff and volunteers may provide informed opinions on matters related to the history of the Tri-Valley. In keeping with the spirit of historical inquiry, the Museum wishes to remind the public that the evidence upon which said opinions are based should weigh more heavily upon the scales of judgment than the nominal authority of those providing the opinions.
