Amador Valley High School History

In 1921, 24 Pleasanton teenagers were attending Livermore High School which was nearing full capacity. In 1922, concerned parents and residents voted to establish the Amador Valley Joint Union High School District, covering Pleasanton, Dublin and an unincorporated area north of Pleasanton near Tassajara Valley. The district prepared a referendum on a bond issue for construction, and Pleasanton youth took to the streets to encourage its passage.

The new Amador Valley High School was designed to accommodate two hundred students, with plans for future expansion-envisioning classroom space for two hundred more students, and a dedicated auditorium separate from the gymnasium.

The location selected for the new high school was approximately a quarter mile north of the Arroyo del Valle, just outside Pleasanton’s city limits on the road to Santa Rita. The contractor broke ground in August 1923, with the intention of having the building ready for use by the following March.

During planning and construction the district built a temporary four-classroom facility on the grounds of the grammar school, the basement of which also served as the high school’s chemistry lab
