Thanks for this! I ran across this urban legend in the original edition of Laura Lee Hope's "The Bobbsey Twins: Merry Days Indoors and Out." I got the impression that the author didn't approve of girls doing much of anything since Nan and Flossie are just a sort of approving chorus to their brothers' adventures.

No, this is true. My mother told me when my grandmother was a little girl in the 1880s, the same thing happened when the children were at recess. A little girl got to 100 and that was it. It is better to set the limit to 50.
