Full Time 40 hours /week
Salaried/Exempt
Reports to the Executive Director

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
 
The Director of Education will advance the Museum on Main mission through overseeing the direction, planning, implementation and evaluation of a wide array of general public and school educational programs, exhibitions and events.  The position requires a unique blend of program design experience, managerial skills and creative and innovative talents to establish model programs through interaction with all levels of educational institutions, community organizations and other public/private institutions.
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
 
School Programs
Successfully design, resource, manage, conduct and evaluate an array of innovative and interactive educational programs for schools, home schools, day care centers, scout organizations, senior groups on a year-round basis for the Museum on Main.  This involves curriculum development and implementation so that programs are age appropriate.  
 
Current programs include (but not limited to):
 
Class visits at the Museum and in classrooms, downtown walking tours, 2 traveling trunk programs, scout after school programs, and assorted other programs.
 
Public Programs
Successfully design, resource, manage, conduct and evaluate an array of innovative public programs that will engage the audience and advance the mission of the Museum on Main.
 
Current programs include (but not limited to):
 
Ed Kinney Speaker’s Series: book and work with talent, negotiate contracts, schedule and manage ushers, work closely with Firehouse Arts Center on dates and tech issues, provide information for press releases and social media promotion
 
Ghost Walk: book volunteers as ghosts, ghost hosts and front desk, provide training, work closely with Creatures of Impulse, National Charity League and other volunteers on the nights of the events, be present to manage the event
 
MoM’s Reading Time: choose themes a year in advance, procure the readings, prepare complimentary hands on activities, manage any needed volunteers, read and lead the activities as needed
 
Senior Programs: will develop, implement and present a series of multimedia programs based on historic topics with local, state, regional and national interest that will be presented to senior groups at such locations as the Pleasanton Senior Center, Stoneridge, local churches, etc.  
 
Family Days: choose themes for 3 or 4 Saturday/Sunday family days throughout the year to attract a family audience, prepare materials, book volunteers needed to produce or manage the event, be on-site to manage the event
 
Downtown Walking tours: manage the Museum’s downtown walking tours, both audio and guided, train and manage volunteers to assist with a regularly scheduled tour, develop new tours with different themes as needed, and conduct tours as necessary. Be available to serve as a “step on” guide for bus tours that visit the Pleasanton downtown.
 
Kids’ Corner: maintain and manage this hands-on interactive area of the museum for drop in visitors, particularly families with children.
 
Volunteer Programs
 
Recruit, hire, train and supervise Museum on Main volunteer staff needed for the operation of the museum, historic sites and related educational and public program offerings.  
 
 Other duties/responsibilities:
 
  • Maintain a strong working relationship with other area non-profits and community partners with an eye towards developing outreach programs in diverse communities, including teens, people with different learning styles, ethnic communities, and senior citizens. Staff will ensure that we have community engagement and involvement in our programs.
 
  • Assist the Executive Director with social media and other public relations/marketing, web site updates, email marketing and other media as needed .
 
  • Assist the Executive Director, Board and other staff in the development of a long range strategic plan for the Museum’s educational programs, exhibitions and events.
 
  • Assist the Executive Director with fundraising opportunities for the advancement of the Museum’s educational services, programs and events.
 
  • Stay current with innovative program delivery and implement creative program curricula and techniques to advance the Museum’s commitment to interdisciplinary, multi-sensory, multi-cultural approaches and activities. Be aware of current educational issues facing schools and school districts (i.e. Common Core) and the effect on Museum activities and program potential.
 
  • Design, copy and distribute flyers, brochures, posters for programs and events as needed.
 
  • Work as part of a small museum team to plan, design and implement exhibits, programs and special events for the Museum to ensure proper historical and educational content in all activities.
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
 
  • Degree in museum studies with an emphasis in Museum Education, Education or a closely related field is required.  
  • Minimum of three to five years’ experience in developing and managing program curricula for public institutions such as cultural centers, museum and/or historic sites. Significant experience in developing and managing public programs that expand the involvement of diverse communities with similar components (i.e. education, public programs, web site development and management, social media, online learning, visitor services, special events, exhibitions, youth programs).
  • Proven ability to envision, plan, implement and evaluate innovative, community-driven public programs, school educational programs, exhibitions and events.
  • Proven managerial experience and excellent supervisory abilities, particularly with volunteers. Solid experience with goal setting and performance review systems.
  • Experience in setting and maintaining exceptional high standards of public programs.
  • Exceptional communication and leadership skills are required.
  • Knowledge of exhibitions development, collection management and current museum principles, practices, and procedures.
  • Demonstrate ability to organize, set and implement priorities, and manage multiple tasks
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to work with a myriad of visitors and their requests
  • Strong commitment to the mission of ALVHS/Museum on Main
  • Strong computer and writing skills 
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Publisher, Excel, Past Perfect and Weebly and/or willingness to learn
  • Willingness and ability to act an integral member of a team toward a common result is imperative
  • Valid California Driver’s License
