PhotoTours are available for school groups and youth groups on Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. We prefer groups of 20 students per tour due to space availability. (Smaller group tours are available, but no less than five persons per tour.)

Interpretive Program Descriptions

Local History Tour – (1 to1 ½ hrs)(Fee) The Local Gallery Tour meets the State’s content standards for the 3rd grade curriculum. The tour gives an overview of local history by exploring the geological makeup of the land, prehistory, the native population, the Rancho Era, and Heritage/Progressive Pleasanton.

Downtown Walking Tour – (1 hr.)(Fee) Is a historical stroll down the picturesque Main St. of Pleasanton stopping and talking about the buildings unique historical significance to the town. The tour includes stops at historically relevant buildings and a discussion about the different architectural styles that make up the downtown community.

Side Street Excursions – (1 ½ hr.)(Fee)An excursion down the small side streets of Pleasanton. The stroll takes you down Main St, Neal St., Peters St, St. Mary’s through Ray Street to 1st and 2nd Street. The stroll focuses on the businesses that helped the community of Pleasanton prosper from the little specialized mercantile shops to the industries that brought new markets to Pleasanton. (Brick Factories, Wineries, Cheese Factory, and the Railroads.)

Corridor Country- (1hr)(Fee) Take a journey through time in the Alisal Valley. Learn about the changes that occurred to the Valley by the people who traveled through it and especially from the one’s that traveled here to make it their home.

Flags over California- (1hr)(Fee) Flags have become everyday objects. In this tour learn about the many Nation’s that laid claim to the territory we call California. From the Russian outposts to the English interests in California which has made our own state’s history very unique and culturally diverse.

The Woman’s Improvement Club (W.I.C.) –(1hr)(Fee) Building a community of character is not a new idea in Pleasanton. The Women’s Improvement Club formed in 1908 was a force for change in the city and they did make a difference. Come learn about the difference they made.

Pioneer Cemetery Tour – (1 to 1 ½ hrs)(Fee) Another exciting way to learn about the Pioneers families from this area is to explore the historical depths of the plots in the local cemeteries. (Catholic and Pioneer Cemeteries) The history weaves a tale from Agostin Bernal and Antonio Sunol through to the Castersons, the Oxens, the Andrades, the Schween, families. All were Pioneers in establishing the pleasant community we know today.

Knowledge Hill Tour – (1 hr.)(Fee) Get educated in the knowledge of the unique historical development of the superb school system here in Pleasanton. From the small one-room school to the construction of multi-classroom facility on “Knowledge Hill’. It took the power of influence the individuals, community groups, and city bond measures that assured the children of Pleasanton an education above all others.

Progressive Era Tour – (1 hr.)(Fee) The development and ramifications of technological changes, the rise of international markets, and the development of large corporations and there effects on the economy of Pleasanton. Pleasanton being an agricultural community change took a long time. That doesn’t mean progress was not being made in grass root action to improve local conditions that led to state and nationwide reforms.

Military Tour – (1 hr)(Fee) The influence of the local military bases and personnel on the community of Pleasanton is yet another unique chapter in the City’s history. “P”- town was influenced and touched by Camp Parks, Camp Shoemaker, and the Naval Air Station in Livermore. Personnel such as the Seabees, the W.A.V.E.S. and the USO influenced the social community of the town. Later on the development of L.L.N.L. and Sandia changed the character and population of the area.

Parade City – (1 hr)(Fee) From the history of the oldest one-mile race track to the Alameda County Fair. Pleasanton has been privileged in hosting the Alameda County Fair which has afforded us the opportunity to attract unique groups. First off the annual Alameda County Fair parade, the 4th July parades, Religious parades, Fire Muster parades, and Good Times parades. The birth of the Race track and the world famous Balloon Platoon.

Museum Behind the Scenes- (1 hr)(Fee) Learn about the jobs that go on behind the scenes at the Museum and what make it what it is? What is the role of a curator, the role of an archivist, the role of the collection room, and how the museum goes about exhibitions/displays and programming. Learn about preservation, and conservation.

Historical Traveling Trunk – (1 to 1 ½ hr)(Fee) The Historical Traveling Trunk is an opportunity for your organization to learn more about the varied and diverse history of Pleasanton. You can arrange with the Museum for a docent to come to your classroom, business, or community gathering to set up a learning booth or an active lecture. Learning booths are activity centers with artifacts and pictures on display for your group to enjoy. Also provided is a children’s dress up trunk with replica vintage costumes. In addition your group can request an activity that coincides to certain theme of choice. The Active Lectures are theme-based talks, which include artifacts, pictures, and activities that pertain to particular time frame in Pleasanton’s History.

O.U.T. ings – (1 ½ hrs)(Fee) This program is designed for Pre-school to 3rd graders. The fee for each date is $5.00 per child due on the date of the event, along with program forms. This is a historical reading and activity program. The evening weaves 3 stories through 2 activities/games and always ends with a treat. Each evening will focus on a theme and we encourage parent participation.

Lark in the Park- (10am to 1pm) This program takes you on a trip to Pleasanton’s local parks and helps one explore local history that surrounds you. On a monthly basis a Museum Docent will set-up an information table to talk about that specific history of the park’s name and its relationship to Pleasanton’s heritage. The Docent will also hand out an informational sheet that gives a short history of the Park. Photos will be available for purchase ($5 for one quality photo/$1 of one photocopy) and an activity related to that Parks specific history will be presented. One can join the yearly club for a fee of $25 which includes passport, binder, and one photo of each parks special history.

Discovery Heritage Homes – At the Farmer’s Market every other month join us to explore the heritage homes and buildings that grace Pleasanton’s downtown area. Come also to explore the outlying areas of Pleasanton from the foothills to the valleys and beyond. The Museum will focus on one to two structures in the Valley and provide pictures and facts sheets on the homes/buildings. This maybe a good way for you to see if your house is on our heritage list or a way for you to give us information about your house’s specific history. You can also set-up appointments with our Archivist to help you research the history of your home. (Photo fees - $5 for one quality picture and $1 for one photocopied picture.)

Fireside Chats –(Fee) This is also a story time program for older children 1st to 3rd grade. The program focuses on the oral history of the eastern and western cultures. Also other types of literature will be explored like letters, journal entries and it will also examine the myth, legends and tall tales of the area.

Starry, Starry Night Program-(7pm to 9pm) Informal talks will take place on the flora and fauna that surround the area and populate the Pleasanton Valley. One night they may be talking about the stars and another night they could be talking about life/habitat of the nocturnal raccoon. So keep your eyes posted for these gatherings.

Discovery Document- A close look at documents that have shaped our Nation and our State. In an informal study group we’ll study certain documents of a particular period in history and learn how these documents changed our lives and culture.

Broadcast History – High School volunteers can, if interested, help the Museum on Main catalog the historical buildings of Main St. The project encourages the students to research the historical background of the building and videotape a segment about the structure’s past and present.

Participate in History – Open to all grades this program gets the school and students involved in the collection and research of their own personal artifact and/or antiques. The student brings his/her artifact from home to be displayed in the “Hands on the Past” in two display cases. The students are to research the family’s history (a one page description) about the item(s) and provide a picture of themselves (as the researcher) for display.

Oral History Investigation – Junior High and High School volunteers are encouraged to help the Museum on Main compile through video taping the oral History of the Valley.
They will conduct interviews, compile pictures, and edit video to make DVD to be played at the Museum.
